Antonio PESENTI, Italy / Professor of Anesthesiology

Antonio Pesenti is Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Milan-Bicocca and
Director of the Postgraduate School from 1999. This year he has been appointed President of the
School of Medicine of the University of Milan-Bicocca. Since 1993 he is Chief of the Emergency
Department at San Gerardo Hospital, Monza , Italy .

He completed his fellowship in Pulmonary at NIH in Bethesda under the leadership of Dr Theodor
Kolobow, “the pioneer” of the extracorporeal respiratory support, which has been his main research
interest till today. Other main research interests include respiratory mechanics, lung [보안삭제]al imaging
and gas exchange in ARDS, nutrition and metabolism of the critically ill patients, septic shock and
cardiac arrest.

Since 2009, he has been national coordinator of a national “ECMO Network” of 14 centers instituted by
the Italian Health Ministry after the H1N1 pandemic.

He is currently President of the ARF Section of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM)
and Chairman of EuroELSO (European Extra Life Support Organization) Logistics and Education
Committee.

He acts as reviewer for the most important scientific journals and from 1995 he has been member of
the editorial board of Clinical Intensive Care and Current Opinion in Critical Care journals.

In 1998 he acted as appointed Jury Member at the American European Consensus Conference on
ARDS organized by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the American Thoracic Society
which results were published on peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Since 1974 he has kept more than 500 lectures as invited guest in national and international
Congresses/Conferences.

He his author or co-author of some 600 scientific publications on national and international scientific
journals, 120 of which peer-reviewed. He has deposited three patent applications on ECMO and on
mechanichal ventilation.

From 2002 to 2004 he was Member of the Commission of the Italian Educational Ministry (MIUR) for
the study of political and legal problems of Italian University.

He is coordinator of the organization of the out-of-hospital Emergency System of the Lombardia
Region.
